The Vaal Dam constructed in 1938 is a popular tourist area located in the Northern region of the Free State. It is South Africa's fourth largest dam by volume and has a shoreline spanning over 800kms. The dam is bordered by three provinces: the Free State having the longest stretch, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.
Lying on one of South Africa's strongest-flowing rivers, the Vaal River, the dam is very popular with water sport enthusiasts. There are three yacht clubs and two marinas here, all providing endless entertainment for visitors.
